This year I will again be giving you the surprise fantasy picks each and every week in my Thursday daily blog and here are my picks for Week 10. Keep in mind you will not find players like Denard Robinson, Matt Barkley or Montee Ball in my picks. These are strictly surprise picks of players who are flying under the radar.
My QB's Of The Week:
QB Nate Sudfeld, Indiana • QB Joe Southwick, Boise St • QB Connor Wood, Colorado
QB Nate Sudfeld (Indiana) – The passing opportunities have been there so far for the Hoosiers and week 3 figures to be another 30+ attempt game against visiting BG. With B2B games of 4 td passes and a 363 yard performance a week ago, Sudfeld gets our pick here as a surprise fantasy QBsince he is not yet a household name.
QB Joe Southwick (Boise St) – After a less than stellar performance in week 1 vs Washington, Southwick and the Broncos offense came alive a week ago against UT-Martin throwing for 234 yds and 5 td’s! A home game against Air Force is just what the doctor ordered for Boise to continue to work through the air as they look to establish themselves as the team to beat in the MW once again.
QB Connor Wood (Colorado) – A change in the coaching staff appears to have greatly improved the Buffaloes passing game thus far in 2013 as Connor Wood has his #1 weapon back in Paul Richardson and has already thrown for 741 yds and 6 td’s thru 2 games. After LY’s dismal performance in “The Valley” against Fresno St, we believe that the Buffs could take to the air early and often and give the Bulldogs some home cooking of their own.
My RB's Of The Week:
RB Mike Davis, South Carolina • RB Paul James, Rutgers •
RB's Jonathan WIlliams & Alex Collins, Arkansas
RB Mike Davis (South Carolina) – While Marcus Lattimore was one of the more popular RB’s in recent years for the Gamecocks, Mike Davis may be in the process of having some SC fans forget about him. This home run threat has now posted B2B 100+ yard performances including a 149 yd outing a week ago vs Georgia. Next on the docket is a Vandy squad that was gashed 2 weeks ago on the ground vs Ole Miss to a tune of 206 yds (5.6). We expect Davis to go deep once again here, and so should you.
RB Paul James (Rutgers) – Highly touted Savon Huggins was expected to be the main ball carrier here this year but Paul James has had other ideas rushing for 301 yds (7.5) and 3 td’s thus far on the young season. Rutgers has another favorable matchup this week vs EMU and James should reap the rewards as the Eagles are surrendering 227 ypg (6.1) on the ground against Howard and Penn St.
RB’s Jonathan Williams & Alex Collins (Arkansas) – Rarely do we mention 2 players at one time but both have been valuable in fantasy leagues thus far. With Bret Bielema now at the helm, ground & pound will be on the docket comparable to yrs past when he was at Wisconsin with names like Montee Ball, James White and Melvin Gordon. With a combined 580 yds and 3 td’s thru 2 gms, both will get their share of toting the rock TY.
My WR's Of The Week:
WR Alex Neutz, Buffalo • WR Odell Beckham • WR TJ Jones, Notre Dame
WR Alex Neutz (Buffalo) – While his 2012 performance of 1,015 rec yds wasn’t too shabby, 2013 appears to be a coming out party on the national scene for Alex Neutz as he’s already pulled in 12 catches for 295 yds against the likes of Ohio St and Baylor. Oh, and by the way, he sat virtually the entire 2H against the Bears! The Bulls take a step down in competition vs FCS foe Stony Brook making us believe that another solid performance out of Neutz should be in the offing.
WR Odell Beckham (LSU) – LSU an offensive juggernaut? That statement is a profounding YES so far this season and the passing game has been a big reason why led by Odell Beckham. He has surpassed the 100 yd rec mark in both contests thus far including last week’s 136 yd, 3 td outing vs UAB. The Tigers now take on Kent St in Baton Rouge and you would have to believe that the Golden Flashes will be shell-shocked from the start, allowing LSU to score at will yet again.
WR TJ Jones (Notre Dame) – TJ Jones has now become the primary target of the Notre Dame passing game as a senior with 15 rec for 323 yds. Purdue is on the docket this week for the Irish in their 2nd consecutive primetime contest and judging by the 300+ yds they allowed in LY’s matchup, things look promising again here. By the end of the 2013 campaign, Jones has the opportunity to be a household name among the nation.
My Defenses Of The Week:
USC • South Carolina • Oklahoma
USC Defense – After the dismal performance that the USC offense was able to deliver a week ago against WSU, you would have to believe that their defense has to be thinking that their success or lack thereof will be on their shoulders at the start of this season. Good matchup this week for the USC def with BC coming to town after posting just 314 total yards a week ago vs Wake. We are projecting the Eagles to hover right around 200 yds of total offense which should make the Trojans very valuable on def this wk.
South Carolina Defense – A few of the USC def coaches were jawing back and forth a week ago in their loss to Georgia. HC Spurrier will be involved this week in the gameplan, which has us liking the Gamecocks here as a surprise defense. A matchup with Vandy could be just what they need after they posted just 13 pts and 276 total yards in this meeting a season ago.
Oklahoma Defense – After allowing a dismal 398 ypg on defense a season ago the Sooners have allowed just 277 ypg TY while allowing a total of just 7 points! Up next is a Tulsa squad that posted just 7 points and 273 yds in their 1st road trip of the season to Bowling Green. The Sooners defense rolls again here so make sure you scoop them up.
