Still Alive After Five
By Nick Portanova

With week five in the books, we have a better idea what will be written next. Genuine national title contenders demonstrated their dominance while the pretenders disappointed those who had high hopes for the underdogs. Houston showed running the table is no easy business, proving what Boise State and Utah accomplished in the past was incredible. Penn St, Miami, and Ole Miss quieted the critics for now, and undefeated Cincy, Iowa, Auburn, and Wisconsin quietly moved pass another opponent. Perennial powers Ohio St and USC also performed very well on the road, especially with motivation from an early season loss. Tim Tebow's status is still a mystery, therefore Florida's future is as well. It should make for another interesting week, for what already is a very unusual season.

We know there are only 13 undefeated teams left and that there will be less in the upcoming weeks, if any. We also know an undefeated season doesn't mean you will play for the national title or even a BCS game, just ask Tommy Tuberville or the "BCS Busters". I understand the strengths and weaknesses of schedules. What it means to play tougher competition, week in and week out. I just think people need to have a better understanding of the strength of team, regardless of their schedule. The SEC is the best overall conference, with the Big Ten not far behind. I believe an unbeaten or one loss SEC champ should play an unbeaten Boise State for it all, only if the rest of the contenders have one loss or more. It will be great for college football, and Boise State definitely deserves a shot after what their program has done over the past eight seasons.

Boise Fate
By Nick Portanova

Who would have imagined a little school from the Gem State which was founded as a junior college in 1932, would have grown into the perennial football powerhouse they are today.  Boise State's football program joined the WAC in 2001 and has dominated the conference since.  6 WAC titles, a BCS Fiesta Bowl victory, 7 straight bowl games, 3 undefeated regular seasons, a 44 game regular season home winning streak, and a ridiculous overall record of 59-9 dating back to 2004 are what I would consider "eye popping" achievements.  Not bad for a school with an enrollment of only 18,844 students and a stadium that currently seats 33,500.  Not bad at all (hahahaha).

Chris Petersen is one of the most gifted coaching minds in college football.  In 2006 he became the Broncos head coach and went on to win the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award, as the best coach in the country.  He led the team to an undefeated season in his first year and capped it off with an unforgettable Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma.  Petersen's overall record will increase to 40-4, after this Saturday's blow out victory against UC Davis.

The rulers of the "smurf turf" appear to be destined for greatness, but I want to know when they will be considered great enough for a shot at the national title.  When you look at their complete body of work, they have done everything a national champion contender is asked of.  They are currently ranked 5 in the polls and will not lose another game this season.  If the only two undefeated teams at the end of the season are whoever and Boise State, they would have earned a shot to play #1.  The results of the 2006 season prove they will not disappoint.

This team can play with anyone, anytime, anywhere.  I am sick and tired of hearing the same story regarding the strength of schedule.  What about the strength of team?  Let them play, let them play!
