Head Coach - Ron Rivera, 1st year
Rivera was a 2nd RD DC by CHI and played there for 9 years as a LB. He spent 2 years as a defensive QC coach with CHI before joining PHI as a LB coach for the 1999-‘03 seasons. Rivera was the Bears’ DC from 2004-‘06 with rankings of 21st, 5th and 6th. After spending ‘07 as SD’s LB coach he was named the DC midway through the ‘08 season until ‘10 with finishes of 25th, 16th and 1st on his resume.
Offensive Coordinator - Rob Chudzinski, 1st year
Chudzinski was CLE’s TE coach in 2004 and joined SD in the same role from 2005-‘06. In 2007 he returned to CLE as their OC and ranked 8th and 31st in total offense. Afterwards he returned to SD to run their TE units for 2009-‘10. Chudzinski has had a TE with 1,000 yds receiving 3 times.
Quarterbacks - Mike Shula, 1st year
Shula was a coaches assistant for TB (‘88-‘90) and then MIA from 1991-‘92 before becoming CHI’s TE coach from 1993-’95. He served as TB’s OC from 1996-’99 with rankings of 28th, 29th, 22nd and 28th in his tenure. From 2000-‘02 Shula was MIA’s QB coach before taking the Alabama HC job (‘03-‘06) leaving with a 26-23 record. He then worked as the JAX QB coach from 2007-’10 with JAX finishing 17th, 15th, 19th and 27th in pass offense.
Running Backs - John Settle, 1st year
Settle entered the NFL as an offensive/STC assistant for CLE/BAL from 1995-97. He then became the RB coach at Fresno St from 1998-2005 with six 1,000 yd rushers. Settle operated as Wisconsin’s RB coach from 2006-’10 as the team rushed for 3,194 yards (5.5) with 48 rushing TD’s.
Wide Receivers - Fred Graves, 1st year
Graves entered the NFL with 26 years of college experience with 19 as a WR coach at Utah. He was the Bills WR coach from 2001-03 when they had nineteen 100 yd receiving efforts. He went to CLE for 2004 (five 100 yd efforts), DET in 2005 (four 100 yd efforts) before sitting out 2006. Graves was the TEN WR coach from 2007-’10 where they tallied twelve 100 yd receiving efforts in that span (27th).
Offensive Line - John Matsko, 1st year
Matsko has been an NFL OL coach since 1992. He is best noted for being the STL OL coach from 1999-‘05 before working in the same capacity for KC in 2006-‘07. Matsko was the Ravens’ OL coach from 2008-‘10 where they allowed 36.3 sacks or 1 for every 13.2 pass attempts.
Defensive Coordinator - Sean McDermott, 1st year
McDermott spent 12 years with the Eagles from 1999-‘10. He is noted for coaching the LB’s/DB’s with PHI before assuming the DC spot for the 2009-‘10 seasons. PHI finished 12th in total yardage both years but 19th and 21st in pts allowed.
Defensive Line - Eric Washington, 1st year
Washington was the DL coach at Northwestern from 2004-‘07 before joining the Bears in 2008. He spent the first 2 years with the Bears as a defensive ass’t/ass’t DL coach before being named the DL coach for 2010. CHI had 25 of their 34 sacks by DL and finished 9th in total defense.
Linebackers - Warren Belin, 1st year
Belin joins the Panthers after 20 years in college football working with LB’s and special teams. He was the LB coach at Vanderbilt from 2002-’09 before working as the OLB coach at Georgia in 2010.
Defensive Backfield Coach - Ron Meeks, 3rd year
Meeks has 10 years of experience as a DB coach with CIN, ATL, WAS, and STL. He is best known for being the Colts’ DC from 2002-08 when they finished 6th or better in pass defense 5 times. From 2005-’08 IND gave up an impressive 55-70 TD/int ratio. Meeks was the CAR DC from 2009-’10 as they finished 8th and 18th in total defense.
Special Teams Coordinator - Brian Murphy, 1st year
Murphy was the Wisconsin Badgers special teams coach from 2002-’05 before joining MIN in 2006. He worked as the Vikings asst special teams coach for 3 years before taking over the position in 2009. Murphy’s units finished 14th and 26th in our rankings in his 2 seasons with the Vikings.
