Head Coach - Lovie Smith, 7th year
Smith entered the NFL as the Buc’s LB coach from 1996-2000. He took over as the Rams’ DC under Mike Martz from 2001-03 finishing 3rd, 13th and 16th in total defense. He was named the Bears’ HC in 2004 and has won the NFC North in 2005, 2006, 2010 with 2 appearances in the NFC Championship (2006, 2010).
Offensive Coordinator - Mike Martz, 2nd year
Martz has 18 years coaching experience in the NFL with 6 as a HC and 5 as an OC. Teams with Martz as an OC/HC have finished in the Top 10 in total offense 6 times. However they have finished 19th or lower 4 straight times in total offense and 16th or lower in total points 4 times as well.
Quarterbacks - Shane Day, 2nd year
Day was the QC coach at SF from 2007-09 working with Martz in 2008. In his 1st year as the Bears’ QB coach CHI logged just one 300 yd passing effort by Cutler vs 3 in 2009 but his ypa improved from 6.6 to 7.6.
Running Backs Coach - Tim Spencer, 8th year
Spencer was the RB coach at Ohio St from 1994-2003. He joined CHI in 2004 as their RB coach and the team has tallied twenty-six 100 yd rushing efforts (22nd) in that span. CHI has also had four 1,000 yd rushers in his 7 years with the team.
Wide Receivers Coach - Darryl Drake, 8th year
Drake was the WR’s coach at Texas from 1998-2003 before joining the Bears in 2004. Since then the Bears have had just sixteen 100 yd receiving efforts in a game (32nd). CHI has also not had a player finish with 1,000 yds receiving in that time.
Offensive Line Coach - Mike Tice, 2nd year
Tice had a 14 year career in the NFL as a blocking/short yardage TE with SEA, WAS and MIN. He has been a TE/OL coach since ‘96. Tice was the Vikings’ HC from 2002-05 then moved on to JAX as an ass’t HC/TE coach. While CHI finished 32nd with 56 sacks allowed LY they gave up 3 or less sks in 9 gms.
Asst HC/Def Coord - Rod Marinelli, 2nd year (3rd overall)
Marinelli has been an NFL coach for 15 yrs spending 10 with TB from 1996-2005. He was the Lions’ HC from 2006-’09 where his defenses finished 28th, 32nd and 32nd respectively. He joined CHI in ‘09 as their DL coach and they improved from 21st in total defense to 17th. In 2010, Marinelli was promoted to ass’t HC/DC and the defense moved up to 9th overall.
Defensive Line - Mike Phair, 1st year
Phair is a scout making a conversion to NFL coach. He was with SEA from 2005-2009 with his first 3 years as a scout. In 2008 he worked as an ass’t LB coach, an ass’t DL coach in 2009 and a defensive ass’t in 2010. Prior to SEA he was a college scout for Tampa Bay from 2002-04.
Defensive Backs - Jon Hoke, 3rd year
Hoke was the DB coach for HOU from 2002-08 as they finished in the bottom half of pass defense for all but 2002. In 2009 he became the Bears DB coach and the pass defense improved from 30th with a 21-22 ratio to 13th with a 29-13 ratio. In 2010 they dropped to 20th with a 14-21 ratio as teams passed more to catch up after falling behind.
Special Teams Coordinator - Dave Toub, 8th year
Toub has firmly entrenched himself as one of the top STC’s in the NFL. He was the Eagles ass’t STC from 2001-’03 prior to joining the Bears. Since then they have finished 10th or better in our special teams rankings incl a #1 finish in 2007. Chicago has logged 13 PR’s for TD’s and 6 KR’s for TD’s with Toub on hand.
