Head Coach - Jim Harbaugh, 1st year
Harbaugh was a 1st RD DC by CHI in the 1987 draft. Over 15 seasons he played for CHI, IND, BAL, SD and CAR. After leading 1-AA Univ of San Diego to a combined 29-6 record from 2004-‘06 Harbaugh became Stanford’s HC in 2007. He departed the program with a 29-21 mark incl a 12-1 record in 2010 which was the Cardinal all time best season.
Offensive Coordinator - Greg Roman, 1st year
Roman has 14 years of experience as an NFL coach working as an off/def QC, TE coach, QB coach and as an asst OL coach. He was tabbed as Stanford’s run game coordinator in 2009 also working w/ the TE’s/OL’s. In 2010 Roman picked up asst HC responsibilities leading the Cardinal offense to 40.3 ppg (9th), 472.5 ypg (14th) and 213.8 rushing ypg (17th).
QB Coach - Geep Chryst, 1st year
Chryst has served 19 years as an NFL coach mainly working w/ QB’s. He has been with CHI, ARZ (twice) and was Harbaugh’s QB coach/OC for the 1999-2000 seasons. He was the Panthers TE/off QC coach from 2006-‘10.
RB Coach - Tom Rathman, 3rd year (9th overall)
Rathman was a FB drafted in the 3rd RD by SF in ‘86 and played for 9 yrs. He acted as the 49ers RB coach from 1997-‘02 then went onto the same role with the Lions (‘03-‘05) and Raiders (‘06-‘08). Rathman rejoined SF in 2009 with the tm finishing 25th and 19th in rush offense with ten 100 yd rushing efforts (8th).
WR Coach - John Morton, 1st year
Morton was an UFA w/OAK in 1993 who also played in the WFL and CFL thru spring of 1997. He was the WR’s coach for USC from 2007-10 also holding the passing game coordinator title for 3 of his 4 years. He has also been an offensive asst with OAK and NO in their passing games.
OL Coach - Mike Solari, 2nd year
Solari was a TE/asst OL coach for SF from 1992-96. He was then the KC OL coach from 1997-2005 before being promoted to OC for 2006-07 (16th/31st). Solari was SEA’s OL coach for the 2008-09 seasons allowing 36 (10th) and 41 sacks (25th). In 2010 he rejoined SF with the OL allowing 44 sacks (26th).
Defensive Coordinator - Vic Fangio, 1st year
Fangio has 11 years of experience as a DC in the NFL with 8 of those under Dom Capers. While he has two Top 10 finishes as a DC, he also has ended a year ranked 29th or lower. He was the Ravens LB coach/HC special asst from 2006-09 on defenses that finished 6th or better all 4 years. In 2010 he was Stanford’s DC as they went from 90th to 21st in total def.
DL Coach - Jim Tomsula, 5th year
Tomsula is a blue collar DL coach who has coached at every level in football for over 28 yrs. Since becoming SF’s DL coach in ‘07 they have improved from 22nd to 8th in rush def. Tomsula was SF’s interim HC for the final gm of ‘10 which he won 38-7.
Outside LB Coach - Jim Leavitt, 1st year
While Leavitt has over 30 years experience in CFB he has never held a coaching position in the NFL. He recently was the HC for South Florida from 1995-2009 exiting with a 95-57 record. Leavitt has 6 years of experience coaching LB’s and that was with Kansas St from 1990-95.
Secondary Coaches - Ed Donatell, 1st year
A career secondary coach, Donatell was the GB DC from 2000-03 followed by ATL’s DC from 2004-06. The highest his defenses finished was 12th (2002) with the lowest coming in 22nd (2005 and 2006). Donatell was DEN’s secondary coach from 2009-10 finishing 3rd (18-17 TD/int) and 25th (26-10) in pass defense.
Special Teams/Asst HC - Brad Seely, 1st year
Seely has 22 years of experience as an NFL STC and is one of the top 5 coaches in the NFL at his unit. He was NE’s STC from 1999-2008 and CLE’s in 2009-10. Since 2000 he has logged 7 marks of 11th or better in our ST’s rankings and was the 2009 ST Coach of the Year.
