OTHER INFORMATION

Head Coach - Jack Del Rio, 9th year
After 11 years as an NFL LB, Del Rio entered coaching with NO in 1997-’98. He was BAL’s LB coach from 1999-2001 before becoming the CAR DC in 2002 as they went from 31st to 2nd in defense. In ‘03 he took over as JAX HC but since going 11-5 in ‘07 has had 3 straight non-winning seasons.
Offensive Coordinator - Dirk Koetter, 5th year
Koetter arrived after being the Arizona St HC from 2001-06 (40-34). He has been either a OC or HC in CFB/NFL since 1985. Since taking over, JAX has posted 28 games of 24 or more points with his help. They have finished 7th/6th, 20th/24th, 18th/24th and 15th/18th in terms of yards/ppg with Koetter at the helm.
QB Coach – Mike Sheppard, 1st year
The only skill position Sheppard hasn’t coached in his 17 years in the NFL is RB’s. He was CIN’s WR coach from 2007-10 where the team had twenty-one 100 yd receiving efforts. He sat out 2006 after being with NO as their QB coach from 2002-04 and OC in 2005.
RB Coach – Earnest Byner, 2nd year
Byner was an NFL RB for 14 years with CLE, WAS and BAL. He worked in the Ravens front office from 1998-2004 before joining WAS as a RB coach from 2005-07. In 2008-09 he was the Titans RB coach helping Chris Johnson become the 6th 2000 yd rusher in NFL history. In 2010, JAX finished 3rd in rushing with nine 100 yd rushing efforts.
WR Coach – Johnny Cox, 3rd year (1st yr as WR Cch)
Cox was elevated to WR coach after spending 2009-10 as the offensive QC coach. In 2008 he was TB’s defensive QC coach. He has 14 years as a college/high school coach mainly working with WR’s.
OL Coach – Andy Heck, 8th year
Heck was drafted 15th overall in 1989 by SEA. He played for 12 years for SEA, CHI and WAS. He was an asst OL coach in 2004-05 before being promoted. Since taking over JAX has avg’d 37 sacks per year or 1 every 13.2 pass att’s.
Defensive Coordinator – Mel Tucker, 3rd year
Tucker was the Browns’ DB coach from 2005-07 and was promoted to DC for the 2008 season finishing 26th. In 2009, his 1st year here, JAX went from 17th to 23rd due to injuries which forced a hybrid 3-4. In 2010 the Jags finished 28th in total defense and 24th in ppg allowed.
DL Coach – Joe Cullen, 2nd year
In 2006-08, Cullen was the DL coach for the Lions as the team tallied 30, 37 and 30 sacks. He spent 2009 with Idaho as their DL coach with the team earning 15 sacks. Last year in Cullen’s 1st year with JAX, the Jaguars almost doubled their sack total from just 14 (32nd) to 26 (30th).
LB Coach – Mark Duffner, 6th year
Duffner’s 1st tour as an NFL coach was with CIN as their LB coach from 1997-2000. In 2001-02 he was their DC as they finished 9th and 17th in total defense. From 2003-05 he was GB’s LB coach before coming to JAX in 2006 as their LB coach. Since then the Jags have declined in rush defense each season from 4th in ‘06 down to 22nd last year.
DB Coach – Cory Undlin, 3rd year (2nd Yr as DB cch)
In 2004 Undlin was an asst DB coach for NE then shifted to CLE to be a defensive QC coach for 2005-06. He was their secondary coach in 2007 and DB coach for 2008 as they finished 14th in pass defense. He joined JAX as a defensive asst in 2009, becoming the DB coach in 2010 when they finished 28th in pass defense with 13 int’s (T-23rd).
Special Teams Coach – Russ Purnell, 3rd year
Purnell has been coaching special teams at the college/NFL level since 1982. He has worked with SEA, HOU, BAL and IND before coming to JAX in 2009. In 2004 he led IND to their best special teams finish in our rankings (#7) in the Manning era. JAX ended his first year 20th in our rankings but improved to 6th in 2010.
