ABOUT THE DAVEY O'BRIEN COMMITTEE

The Davey O’Brien Foundation believes that leadership on the football field is a powerful force that inspires leadership in the other areas of life. Davey O’Brien translated his prowess as a high school, college and professional quarterback into a life of service and success. In his honor and memory, the Foundation recognizes champions on the field through its national awards program and encourages promising athletes’ academic and career success through scholarships and support.

The Foundation believes that the teamwork and camaraderie of athletics build character and leadership. Its programs encourage those qualities in honor of a man who was a true leader on and off the field. The award recipients exemplify O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and character in both the athletic and academic arenas.

THE DAVEY O'BRIEN AWARD

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award (The O’Brien) honors the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious quarterback award. The Davey O’Brien Foundation hopes to instill a lifelong moral fiber in each candidate by recognizing and honoring quarterbacks who excel in both sports and academics while exhibiting strong character and leadership both on and off the field.

In early August The O’Brien Watch List is determined by a subset of the National Selection Committee. This same subset will vote weekly for the O’Brien Quarterback of the Week, which is featured in weekly press releases from the beginning of the season until the Semifinalists are announced. Quarterbacks of the Week who are not already on The O’Brien Watch List will be added. The Selection Committee narrows the field of candidates to Semifinalists in October, three Finalists in November and selects the Winner in December.

In the spirit of Davey O'Brien and his great legacy, the National Selection Committee, a panel of journalists, broadcasters, reporters, etc., is asked to evaluate each candidate on the following criteria:

Quarterback skills/athletic ability • Academics  • Reputation as a team player • Character • Leadership  •  Sportsmanship

Fans across the country can make their voices heard by participating in The O'Brien Fan Vote. The Fan Vote opens at the beginning of the season and accounts for 5% of the overall vote during each round of voting.

The O’Brien also carries with it a $10,000 grant to the scholarship program of the university in which the Winner is enrolled. Since 1977 the Davey O’Brien Foundation has awarded more than $280,000 to the various Winners’ universities.
