Head Coach - Mike Smith, 4th year
Smith entered the NFL as a defensive ass’t in BAL for 1999-2001 before being promoted to LB coach. In 2003-’07 he worked as the JAX DC finishing 6th or better in 3 of his 4 seasons in total defense. Since taking over as the Falcons HC, ATL has had 3 straight winning seasons for the 1st time in team history, 2 playoff berths in 3 years and a 33-15 record which is the best 3 year record for any ATL HC.
Offensive Coordinator - Mike Mularkey, 4th year
Mularkey started in the NFL as a offensive QC coach for TB in 1994 becoming their TE coach in 1995. He worked for PIT from 1996-’00 as a TE coach then took over as OC for 2001-’03 finishing 3rd, 5th and 22nd in offense. In 2005-’06 he was the Bills HC before taking the MIA OC job in 2006 (20th) then the TE coach in 2007. Mularkey’s offenses have finished 6th, 16th and 16th in total offense with rankings of 10th, 13th and 5th in ppg since taking over.
Quarterbacks - Bob Bratkowski, 1st year
Bratkowski has been an NFL OC for 14 yrs. He was the SEA OC from 1995-’98 finishing 13th, 19th, 3rd and 23rd in total offense. He was the WR coach for PIT from 1999-’00 before joining CIN. Bratkowski was the Bengals OC from 2001-’10 with three Top 10 finishes in total offense from 2005-’07
Running Backs - Gerald Brown, 4th year
Brown was the RB coach/Special Tms coach at Indiana from 2002-’07. He joined ATL in 2008 and the team has fielded a 1,300 yd rusher twice (2008, 2010). ATL has twenty 100 yd rushing efforts in his tenure which is 3rd most in that span.
Wide Receivers - Terry Robiskie, 4th year
Robiskie was MIA’s WR coach in 2007 after working on 2 different coaching staffs for CLE from 2001-’06. ATL has had an 1,100 yd receiver each year and logged seventeen 100 yd receiving marks under Robiskie which is 12th most in that span.
Offensive Line - Paul Boudreau, 4th year
Boudreau has been an OL coach for 6 different teams since 1998. He was St Louis’ OL coach from 2006-’07 after being with Jacksonville from 2003-’05. Since 2003 his units have averaged 31.9 sacks allowed per year.
Defensive Coordinator - Brian Van Gorder, 5th year
He was the ATL’s LB coach in 2007 after being the HC at Georgia Southern in 2006 and JAX’s LB coach in 2005. He was promoted to ATL’s DC in 2008 with finishes of 24th, 21st and 16th in total defense and 11th, 15th and 4th in ppg allowed.
Defensive Line - Ray Hamilton, 4th year
Hamilton was JAX’s DL coach from 2003-’07 before joining ATL in 2008. The Falcons have tallied 93 sacks (1 every 17.7 pass attempts) with 26 of the teams 31 sacks coming from DL in 2010. ATL has finished 25th, 10th and 10th in rush defense under Hamilton as well.
Linebackers - Glenn Pires, 4th year
Pires was a defensive asst with MIA from 2003-’08 working with the DL/LB’s. ATL has only given up 30 points 6 times since Pires took over as LB coach and has allowed 10 or less 11 times.
Defensive Backs - Alvin Reynolds, 4th year
Reynolds was the Defensive Backs coach for JAX under then DC Mike Smith from 2003-’07 with two Top 10 finishes in pass defense in 2005-’06. ATL has finished 21st or lower in pass def since 2007 with 13 games of 300 yds passing allowed.
Secondary - Tim Lewis, 2nd year
Lewis was SEA’s DB coach in 2009 with a #28 ranking. In 2007-08 he was CAR’s Secondary coach (#17, #18 pass defense) after 3 years as the NYG DC from 2004-’06 with rankings of 13th, 24th and 25th in total defense.
Special Teams Coordinator - Keith Armstrong, 4th year
Armstrong coached MIA’s special teams from 2001-’07 with four Top 10 finishes in our rankings. Armstrong’s special teams with ATL are just one of 3 units to finish in the Top 10 of our rankings for each of the L3Y (CHI, CLE). In 2008, ATL allowed a total of just 43 yds on PR’s all season.
