Head Coach - Mike Tomlin, 5th year
Tomlin is one of 7 coaches in history to win a Super Bowl within his first 2 years as an NFL HC. He is just the 2nd PIT HC to win at least 10 games in 3 of his first 4 seasons. Tomlin and Joe Gibbs are the only HC’s to reach the Super Bowl in 2 of their first 4 years.
Off Coordinator - Bruce Arians, 8th year (5th as OC)
Prior to earning the PIT OC job in 2007, Arians was the Steelers WR coach from 2004-’06. PIT has tallied two Top 10 finishes in yards offense (2006, 2009) with Arians on the staff. The team has only finished lower than 12th in offensive ppg once (2008) in the 7 years he has been with the team.
QB Coach - Randy Fichtner, 5th year (2nd as QB coach)
Fichtner became the Steelers QB coach in 2010 after being their WR coach from 2007-’09. He helped the team transition through 3 different starting QB’s finishing 14th in pass offense with 3 games with a 300 yd passer. PIT had seventeen 100 yd receiving efforts with Fichtner as WR coach which tied for 17th in the league.
RB Coach - Kirby Wilson, 5th year
Wilson was the Cardinals RB coach from 2004-’06 where they had five 100 yd rushers in 48 games. Prior to that he was the Bucs RB coach from 2002-’03. Since arriving in 2007, the Steelers have had twenty 100 yd rushers (7th) finishing 3rd, 23rd, 19th and 11th in rush offense.
WR Coach - Scotty Montgomery, 2nd year
Montgomery was a WR with Denver from 2000-’02 with 16 career rec’s (10.0) and 1 TD. He was the WR’s coach at his alma mater, Duke from 2006-’09. He joined PIT in 2010 helping them tally eleven 100 yd receiving efforts which is the most for the Steelers over the L11Y.
OL Coach - Sean Kugler, 2nd year
Kugler entered the NFL in 2007 as the Bills asst OL coach earning the OL coach billet for the 2008-’09 seasons. Over that time the Bills had 3 straight 1,000 yd rushers and allowed an average of 37 sacks. In his 1st year with PIT they fielded a 1,250 yd rusher and allowed 43 sacks.
Defensive Coordinator - Dick LeBeau, 8th year
LeBeau is one of the most highly respected DC’s with 38 years experience as a coach in the NFL. He was inducted to the Pro Football HOF in 2009 for his 14 year career as a CB with DET (171 career int). Since rejoining PIT in 2004 for his 2nd tour as DC, the Steelers have finished in the Top 5 in total defense 6 of the L7Y with 4 finishes of 3rd or better in ppg.
Assistant HC/DL Coach - John Mitchell, 18th year
Mitchell has been the Steelers DL coach since 1994 and was promoted to asst HC in 2007. Since 2001 PIT has finished in the Top 3 in rush defense 9 times and they have allowed 19 rushing TD’s since 2008. Their 62.8 ypg rushing allowed in 2010 was the 3rd best since the 1970 merger.
LB Coach - Keith Butler, 9th year
Butler was the Browns LB coach from 1999-2002 before joining PIT in 2003. Since then the Steelers have finished in the top 10 in sacks 5 times, set a team record with 27.5 sacks by LB’s Woodley/Harrison in 2008 and held foes to 75 or less yards rushing in the 1st 8 games of a season for the 1st time in NFL history.
Defensive Backs Coach - Carnell Lake, 1st year
Lake played for the Steelers from 1989-’98 mainly as a safety but also lined up as a CB. He went on to play for JAX (1999-2000) and BAL (2001) before retiring. He had a coaching internship with PHI in their 2009 training camp but this is his 1st full-time NFL coaching job.
Special Teams Coordinator - Al Everest, 2nd year
Everest has 15 years experience as a STC in the NFL. He was the ARZ STC from 1996-’99, the NO STC from 2000-’05 (2 Top 10 finishes in our rankings) and the SF STC from 2007-’09 (2 Top 10 finishes). PIT improved from 26th to 14th in our special teams rankings in his first year with the team.
