Head Coach - Norv Turner, 5th year
Turner is the only HC to start his SD tenure with 3 straight division titles and the 1st since Barry Switzer with DAL (1994-’96). His 41-23 (64%) regular season mark is also a franchise best for a Chargers coach. SD has avg’d an impressive 27.3 ppg since Turner took over.
Offensive Coordinator - Clarence Shelmon, 10th year (5th as OC)
Shelmon was a RB coach for 16 years with the LA Rams, DAL, SEA and SD. After helping SD earn 5 straight 2,000 yd rushing seasons from 2002-’06 he was promoted to OC. SD has finished 20th, 11th, 10th and 1st in total yards since ‘07.
QB Coach - John Ramsdell, 6th year
After serving with the Rams from 1994-2005 as a QB/WR/TE coach at different points, Ramsdell joined SD in 2006. He is credited for helping develop Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger in a complicated system. SD has logged twenty 300 yd passing efforts since Ramsdell joined the team as its QB coach.
Wide Receivers Coach - Charlie Joiner, 3rd year (9th overall)
Joiner joined the Pro Football HOF in 1996 after an 18 year career. He was SD’s WR coach from 1987-’91, BUF’s for 1992-2000, KC’s from 2001-’07 before returning to SD in 2008. SD has logged twenty-two 100 yd receiving efforts by the team in his 2nd term.
OL Coach - Hal Hunter, 6th year
Hunter spent most of his coaching career in the college ranks serving as the OC at Indiana from ‘00-01 where his QB was Antwaan Randle El. After spending ‘02-05 as the OL coach at North Carolina he made the jump to the pros. Hunter’s OL has all’d an average of just 28 sks a season in his 5 year tenure.
Defensive Coordinator - Greg Manusky, 1st year
After a 12 year career as a LB for WAS/MIN/KC, Manusky served as the Redskins LB coach in 2001. From 2002-2006 he was the Chargers LB coach under Marty Schottenheimer learning the current system. He advanced to the 49ers DC role for 2007-’10 where they finished 25th, 13th, 15th and 13th respectively in the NFL in total defense.
DL Coach - Don Johnson, 3rd year
Johnson was the DL coach for the Bears in 2005-’06 under former DC Ron Rivera after working in the NFL’s Internship program with SF. He was the OAK DL coach in 2007-’08 finishing 31st in rush def each year. SD has finished 20th and 4th in rush defense in his tenure.
LB Coach - John Pagano, 10th year
Pagano has been a defensive asst with SD since 2002. He has risen from defensive QC coach to LB asst before being promoted to LB coach in 2008.
Asst HC/Secondary Coach - Steven Wilks, 3rd year
Wilks was the Bears DB coach from 2006-’08 when they finished 11th, 27th and 30th in pass defense. In 2009 he was brought to SD by former DC Ron Rivera. The Chargers improved from 31st to 11th in his 1st year with 14 int’s earned by the team. In 2010 SD was 1st in pass defense with 16 int’s earned.
Special Teams Coach - Rich Bisaccia, 1st year
Bisaccia previously spent his entire NFL coaching career with TB starting in 2002. He earned the asst HC tag in 2008 and is credited for ending TB’s 497 game streak without a KR TD. His special teams had three top 10 finishes from 2007-’09 in our rankings before coming in 18th in 2010.
